How to present your paper at International Conferences?

Recently I stumbled upon this blog post by Karthik K, a fellow blogger & a Microsoft Student Partner. Thought it would be useful for you.

How to present your paper at International Conferences?

Now, you have built your robot with fully your own ideas. And you think of presenting your newly INNOVATIVE robot at a conference. There are some rules that are to be followed while you submit your paper details to theconference people. For all the conferences, symposiums or any other competitions, they follow one single format for submitting a paper. There are some steps to follow to impress the conference representatives.
Here are some shortcuts for impressing the representatives. You will have to jump over some important hurdles to get your paper impressed. Let me start with it now.

Step-1: Select your topic first
The first step for you to prepare a paper is to select the right topic you would like to work (research) on. Always choose the topic which you are much interested in. There are a wide variety of topics for you to choose upon.
I have listed below some topics which I love to research on.
1) Nanotechnology
2) Space elevator
3) Cryptography
4) High performance networks
5) Image processing
6) Optical engineering
7) Virtual reality
8) Parallel computing
9) Artificial intelligence
10) Atomic computing
11) Nano robots
12) Nano satellites
13) Server Virtualization
14) Embedded systems
15) Open source software development
The above said topics are some which are mostly common and are interesting to work upon. Start thinking from now on. Always remember, you have got a portable natural storage system with you already, ” YOUR BRAIN”. You are capable of doing!! Each of your innovations contribute to this world.!!! You may also choose from a very wide variety of fields which you are interested in.

Step-2: Working upon your topic
This is the step, where you put your idea to work. You will have to do a lot of research on the topic you choose. There are various ways thru which you can work upon. At first, if you have got your idea clear, you will have to first check whether someone had already worked on the topic or idea that you have worked on. There are a number of ways thru which you can do this.
I use the following sites to check for the ideas, whether someone had done before. These are called as “patents”.
http://www.indianpatents.org.in/
www.google.com/patents
http://www.indianpatents.org.in/
And now that you have found that your ideas are unique, you may proceed to Step-3. But, in case you find that your idea has already been used, try to understand it completely and change your idea so that it overcomes the flaws that are mentioned in the patent. Mostly they will be mentioned in the conclusion section of the paper.

Step-3: Making ready your ABSTRACT and PAPER
Abstract is the first thing which will be sent for any conference or symposiums. The abstract is the complete gist of what your paper contains.
Always remember the following points before you submit your abstract. This is the general IEEE format of an abstract. The abstract must have a word limit of 150-300 words.
WORD LIMIT – 150 to 300 words
FONT – TIMES NEW ROMAN
FONT SIZE – 12pt
LINE SPACING – 1.5pt
MARGINS – 1”
ALIGNMENT – Justified

Step-4: Send your abstract
Once you are done with your abstract, you are ready to mail it!! Here are some tips on mailing your abstract.
1) Be formal, use words like Respected sir/madam.
2) Use phrases such as “Please find the enclosed copy of my abstract in thins mail”, etc.
Some institutions may require you to send a hard copy of you abstract, along with the paper. You may need to enclose a letter with that sometimes. Check the organization or the website of the competition on how to submit your paper.

Step-5: Presenting the PAPER
This is the final thing of your hard work. You after all the formal procedures are over, you will be asked to present the paper at the place defined by the conference people.
You will have to make your slides in such a way that it reaches the audience clearly. Use bullets to number your points.
Make sure your slides do not have any irritating background colors. Use simple templates to make your slides.
Given below is the general format for a presentation. Follow this order for your slides strictly.
TITLE (With your name)
AGENDA
INTRODUCTION
OBJECTIVES
YOUR UNIQUE WORK
METHODS
YOUR FINDINGS AND ALGORITHMS (If any)
CONCLUSION
QUERIES
REFERENCES
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
Almost 99.9% of the competitions follow the IEEE format for a paper.
And that’s it!!!! THE PRIZE IS YOURS FOR SURE!!!!
While presenting the paper, always have in mind that “YOUR PAPER IS THE BEST AMONG ALL AND YOU CAN WIN THE EVENT”. Be confident in yourself.
A future post will cover a complete detailed description about each and every step in detail.

1846..851.. Everyone Won !!!

30th August 1609
400 years passed...and now it’s
30th August 2009 :P
11:45 AM
Did you vote?
Levara nee yabba..voteyyali pada..
These were the words I heard at the beginning of my day.
FYI..This is not the scene on the day of general election polling of India, but much of a similar context... The BITSIAN SU elections.
Here at BITS we chose our own Prez and Gen-Sec every year through a more or less unpolitcal-political process. Though the scenario is better than many cases we see these days, It’s no exception that we are in the so-called prestigious premier institute of India BITS-PILANI.
Bouncing back to the point, those ........[censored in the interest of general public]... woke me up saying it was the last one hour. As soon as I tried to recollect the complete thing, and come out of ma hangover [don't mistake me huh..it’s just due to a continuous 13 hour-deep slumber], some thing flashed into my mind. Something like a storyline, that I’ve been seeing for the last two years.
When I met this thin-lean-bony-funny guy through another thin-lean-bony-funny guy in my early days at BITS, I or maybe none of us imagined things would turnout this way. Towards the end of the first year, for the very first time, I heard the thing right from the guy during wing-pols, two questions popped into my mind that very moment....
1) What the hell does he think of him?
2) How the hell does he think he can do it?
That very next moment, he gave an explanation..It was something simple and clear like this..
As I am planning t contest for Prez in our 3rd year, It would be helpful if I be a Hostel-representative in ma 2nd year. For winning as a H-rep and further issues, It would surely do good if I have a promising wing.
One more funny-thing
During his birthday celebrations, while we were teasing him, he disclosed this thing. He was imitating a senior’s way of putting both his hands in his pockets while walking and that senior was then expected to contest the elections. However that didn’t happen due to various reasons.
This almost flattered me. At that moment I thought he can do it!
First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you..and then,YOU WIN - Mahathma Gandhi
I began to see this happening. Gandhi wasn’t wrong.
That brings us to the second year during which we were wingies and now YES!
I am damn proud to say that we were wingies.
I’ve never seen this guy before midnight in the wing. Always discussing something or the other with the King-Maker as we used to call him. As expected by everyone, and as a result of his groundwork, he won as a H-Rep with a huge majority and sent the signs that he’s going to be the ONE! This was not the crucial part. The way he stuck to his points of the manifesto and the way he worked to fulfill his duties as a H-Rep clearly laid his foundations. He instilled faith in the inmates and gained the support of batchmates. That brings us to the end of the most colourful year of any BITSIAN, the second year.
He didn’t even rest during the summer we had after 2nd year, the PS 1. PLAY SCHOOL is a more apt title than PRACTICE SCHOOL. They worked and made everything ready by the time we were back in campus for our third year.
Soon began the process of elections. Nominations were invited and unlike previous years there were 4 nominations for the Gen-Sec . But, as earlier , there’s no change in the presidential nominations.
Our guy’s nomination was filed as expected by everyone and we also began to see few new faces coming into picture. Campaigning period, AUDI debate [more precisely AUDI ragging] were as usual with a huge support base for our guy. As the day of polling neared, the opponents, devoid of all their methods of striking back, started so called ANTI-CAMPAIGNING. This raised few eye-brows and more importantly various doubts over the thin-bony-lean guy’s victory. Regionalism always played a crucial role in BITS and this time It’s not only regionalism. It’s the faith, the assurance and something more.
All this might have lead some other person to lose all the hope, but in this case, It further increases the zeal. He began working even harder, harder than ever before. It was something like now-or-never scenario and everyone put themselves in completely.
Hmmm..I woke up...went straight to the common room, and with no second thought in mind, cast my vote.
And at about 5pm in the evening, we heard people screaming, and we went towards the insti to know the result.
This time truly, I felt something inside me rushing. Then for two continuous hours, we shouted, screamed, laughed, cried, rolled on the floor on seeing some people..It was a mix of emotions.
We went to each bhawan screaming out whatever we wanted to...from the last two years.
We felt like we conquered the whole earth and there’s nothing more to do.
We moved in procession carrying the guy, throwing him up, dancing..
After all this I began wondering, He’s not my brother.. None of us were his relatives...But everyone felt as if it were their victory, everyone was happy for him, happy for us.
Finally, It’s not he who won the Presidential election.
The fact is WE WON...Yess!!! WE WON!!!
Mahathma Gandhi once said
First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you..and then, YOU WIN
He’s no Superman, not a 10P, not a great guy..he’s one of us, who did all this.
He may have faced a lot of hurdles, lot of opposition, lot of criticism, lot of many more unwanted things. But, Gandhi wasn’t wrong.
Yess!! We WON !!!
Thanking everyone responsible....Congratulating MARIO and company [King-makers :P and all that stuff...]
This one’s truly for you Sudheer a.k.a MARIO a.k.a
Sudheer Babu Marisetty, the President of BITS SU
won:1846 majority :851
Excuse me for any mistakes and feel free to leave any comments.
Thanks everyone once again.

Tribute to Y.S.R !!

It's a great loss to humanity !!
India has lost a great leader !!
The light has gone!!

These are the words you listen from any person soon after the incident happened .The trauma created by YSR's sudden death, it is proved beyond doubt that he was a down to Earth leader for his people . He is a leader of masses and a man with great vision . He was a rare blend among the politicians with his gandhian principles along with power to take a decision and getting it done. For students like us , we need to know that his initiation into politics started when he became the Student's Union PREZ while doing his MBBS. He has done many projects for the upliftment of the poor .The void created by him cannot be fulfilled to andhra .

Rest In Peace Y.S.R
